Throughout Stargirl, the characters of Stargirl and Leo battle conformity. Stargirl tries her hardest to remain true to herself, but with Leo's influence and harsh judgment she changes herself for a brief period of time. In the end, Stargirl is grue to herself - challenging status quo, proving the importance of being yourself, and showing Leo what should form your identity (you!).
Stargirl is a very strangely kind person. Leo (around chapters 20-22) discovers why Stargirl acts the way she does : she has a pure desire to make others happy. Stargirl is not motivated by recognition, but by the happiness she can help produce in others.
